The Séranne Mountain

The mountains around Saint Jean de Buèges

Sitting just behind the village of Saint Jean de Buèges (altitude 150m), the Séranne Mountain dominates the valley reaching a peak of 950m. The mountain is a haven for walkers and nature-lovers, criss-crossed with paths that would have originally been used by shepherds and their herds.
The Séranne mountain was created during the Jurassic period and is formed primarily of limestone. It occupies the southermost tip of the great Larzac Plateau. Water flows down through the porous rock and reappears in the valley.

When the weather is good - as is most often the case here! - the panorama is said to make your heart skip a beat! Towards the south the view extends to the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean as far as the Camargue, and over in the direction of Provence with the characteristic peak of Mont Ventoux often visible. When the atmosphere is exceptionally clear, one can even catch a glimpse of the snow-covered peaks of the Alps. Towards the West and the North, the vast Causse of the Larzac and the splendour of the Cevennes stretch out in front of you.
